Paan

As a meal comes to an end there is this novelty item called 'Pan', which is a betel leaf wrapped around a variety of ingredients. This item is chewed to help digestion, and can be a substitute for a dessert. A pan-seller is to be found in every nook and corner of not only cities and towns but even in villages and other smaller places in India. This tradition is found all over the world. He / She is omnipresent in the sense that one can find a Pan shop at railway stations, outside the theatres, or bus stops. Every paan seller has his special recipies. There are as many styles of paan as the number of states in India. You may try one if you do not mind your lips coloured in blood red. There are lots of varieties of paan but several famous varieties of paan are Banarasi, Calcutta, Meetha (sweet) and Sada (plain).

The Tradition

Paan was invented by the Scholars of Aruvedas with the help of Dhanvantari thousands of years ago after taking experiments on rats. Paan was found to be good for digestion. Even reference of Pan is found in Shrimad Bhagavatam as Lord Krishna used to chew. This evidence is of 5000 years ago. The tradition of eating Paan was popularised by Queen Noorjehan, the mother of King Shahjehan who built the world famous Taj Mahal for his Queen. In olden days women used natural elements for makeup and cosmetics. Queen Noorjehan discovered that by adding some particular ingredients to the Paan and eating it gives a beautiful natural red colour to the lips. So along with it's taste the Paan was eaten by women for reddening the lips.

Nargis Business Tradition

In 1947,our Pan business was originally started by our Great-Grand Father, originated in Nairobi (Kenya). During that time, this particular type of business venture was fairly new concept. There were not many Pan-shops situated in the country at that time. Who would know, the venture would be a such a success. The site was a restaurant and Pan-shop.
Our business in the United Kingdom has been running for the past 30 years, at our present location in Southall. This was originally a Pan-shop, and has been expanded to become a Pan-shop and restaurant. The name 'Nargis', is a trade-mark name, known to everyone who is familiar with the tradition of Pan consumption. We are known for our numerous choices of Pan according to the customers choice/s, including the speed and service, and also welcome any challenge from competitors for speed, quality and efficiency.
